Doctorate
At the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, the Department 2: Teaching, Science and Composition awards the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.) in the subjects of Musicology and Music Education on the basis of proof of special scientific qualification by means of a dissertation and an oral examination (disputation).
Admission to the doctoral program requires:
- a master's degree in musicology or music education, respectively
- or the first state examination for a teaching position at a Gymnasium or a teaching position for special schools (plus a supplementary examination if the academic term paper was not written in the doctoral subject)
- or a supplementary examination for candidates who have obtained an instrumental pedagogical degree with a scientific profile or a degree for the teaching profession at secondary schools or for elementary schools.
In Department 3: Performing Arts, members develop new approaches and methods of research in dance studies. Work is currently underway in the doctoral committee to expand the canon of subjects.
PhD Committee
The doctoral committee of the HfMDK is responsible for all doctoral matters and in particular for the organization of the doctorate. The members of the doctoral committee are the professors and the habilitated academic staff members who represent the subjects of musicology and music education at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst.
