The Ensemble

The Ensemble Neue Musik of the HfMDK develops and performs important ensemble works of the last 50 years as well as new works by members of the composition classes. In addition, program requests from participating, interested students can be accepted and implemented. Prof. Lucas Fels and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Kreppein are responsible for the subject.

Artistic planning is carried out by an ensemble commission consisting of Prof. Lucas Fels, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Kreppein, Christoph Altstaedt as well as Dr. Karin Dietrich, Prof. Jaan Bossier, Prof. Florian Hölscher or Prof. Christoph Brandt and two students, one each from the fields of composition and KAM.

The ensemble usually develops one program per semester.

Application form

Interested students register for the respective program via a registration form, which is sent by e-mail in the Artistic Music Studies courses and is also available on the website. Registrations are managed by the conducting studio assistant (dirigieratelier@orga.hfmdk-frankfurt.de)

The programs are designed in parts with a lead time of one year, which means that the framework is fixed for the long term. The application deadline is at the end of each semester for the following semester (July 31 for the winter semester, January 31 for the summer semester).

Students with an orchestral obligation who could not be assigned to the university orchestra and who would like to provide substitute performances via the Ensemble Neue Musik can still apply for participation immediately after the publication of the orchestra assignments at the beginning of a semester. The management of the ensemble also endeavors to integrate these students. For this purpose, there are parts of the program that are determined at short notice.

Please refer to the relevant fact sheet on orchestra allocation and substitutes.

Participating students are invited to work together with members of the composition classes who write works for the ensemble. This concerns development work in the area of playing techniques, feedback on notation or a try-out of sketches.

Dates

  • for concerts are published on the university's website.
  • participants will be informed of the dates for rehearsals at the beginning of the semester.

Credit transfer options

  • In the elective area of the Artistic Training in Music degree programs. The signature is provided by the director of the New Music Ensemble.
  • Students with orchestra as a compulsory subject who have not been allocated to the university orchestra can take part in the New Music Ensemble instead. If you are interested, please register via the registration form or directly in the conducting studio as soon as the orchestral line-up is published. The ensemble project can then be recognized in the subject orchestra (compulsory section). In this case, the signature will be issued by the orchestra office at the end of the semester.
  • Upon application, participation in the New Music Ensemble can also be recognized as chamber music (compulsory subject), especially if the instruments are primarily used in an ensemble context. In this case, a professor from the chamber music department will sign the application.
  • Students who choose a specialization in New Music for their Master's degree participate in the Ensemble Neue Musik for two semesters. Students with a specialization will be given preferential consideration in terms of instrumentation and programming.
