Mu­si­co­lo­gy

Mu­si­co­lo­gy at the HfMDK Frank­furt is a di­sci­pli­ne that is in­te­gra­ted into all mu­sic-re­la­ted de­gree pro­grams in the form of re­qui­red and elec­ti­ve mo­du­les. The in­ter­di­sci­pli­na­ry cur­ri­cu­lum in­cludes lec­tures on mu­sic histo­ry as well as se­mi­nars co­ve­ring all are­as of mu­si­co­lo­gy.

Prof. Dr. Fa­bi­an Kolb and PD Dr. Rai­ner Hey­ink teach his­to­ri­cal mu­si­co­lo­gy and mu­sic histo­ry from the Midd­le Ages th­rough the ear­ly 20th cen­tu­ry. Prof. Dr. Chris­ti­na Rich­ter-Ibá­ñez te­a­ches con­tem­po­ra­ry and po­pu­lar mu­sic sin­ce the 20th cen­tu­ry as well as per­for­mance stu­dies. Sin­ce Oc­to­ber 2026, Prof. Dr. Adri­an Kuhl has held the joint pro­fes­sor­ship fun­ded by the Aca­de­my of Sci­en­ces and Li­te­ra­tu­re in Mainz and the HfMDKfor “Mu­si­co­lo­gy with a Fo­cus on Edi­to­ri­al Phi­lo­so­phy and Me­thods of Di­gi­tal Mu­sic Edi­ti­on.” Ad­di­tio­nal fa­cul­ty mem­bers and ad­junct te­a­chers en­su­re a com­pre­hen­si­ve ran­ge of cour­ses that ch­an­ges each se­mes­ter.

Gra­dua­tes of te­a­cher edu­ca­ti­on pro­grams with a ma­jor in mu­sic and a re­se­arch pa­per in mu­si­co­lo­gy may pur­sue a Ph.D. in mu­si­co­lo­gy at the HfMDK.
