PLAY! With Geir Lysne and the hr Big Band
The hr-Bigband last worked with conductor Geir Lysne in 2004. The Norwegian is now regarded as an innovative spirit who masterfully weaves experimental sounds into his diverse jazz pieces. He served as principal conductor of the NDR Big Band until 2025. Now we’re bringing him back to Frankfurt so he can pass on his decades of experience in conducting big bands, arranging, and composing to the students in the MA Big Band program.

Geir Lysne studied saxophone and composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. He has received numerous European music awards and scholarships, including an ECHO JAZZ and the Spellemannprisen, the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammys. For his own “Geir Lysne Listening Ensemble,” he composes avant-garde music that goes far beyond the usual big band repertoire. In addition, he has collaborated with us, the NDR Big Band, the Danish Klüvers Big Band, the Finnish UMO Big Band, and classical orchestras. He tours with international artists and, after many years of teaching in Oslo, is now a professor of arrangement at his alma mater.
