Masterclass with Diana Damrau

When a glo­bal ca­re­er meets the pro­mo­ti­on of young ta­lent, a mo­ment of pu­blic cul­tu­ral in­te­rest is crea­ted: Dia­na Damrau, one of the most in­ter­na­tio­nal­ly re­now­ned so­pra­nos of our time, is co­m­ing to the Frank­furt Uni­ver­si­ty of Mu­sic and Per­forming Arts (HfMDK) at the end of Fe­bru­a­ry for a one-week mas­ter class.

The cour­se, which is in part open to the pu­blic, pro­vi­des rare in­sights into ar­tis­tic work and pro­ces­ses at the hig­hest le­vel - from vo­cal tech­ni­que and sta­ge pre­sence to ca­re­er and trai­ning is­su­es. And makes it pos­si­ble to ex­pe­ri­ence top cul­tu­re in the heart of Frank­furt - open to the pu­blic, free of char­ge and with an ex­tra­or­di­na­ry ar­tis­tic den­si­ty. A to­pic that not only mo­ves the next ge­nera­ti­on of mu­si­ci­ans, but also the re­gi­on's cul­tu­ral­ly in­te­rested pu­blic.

From Fe­bru­a­ry 23 to 28, Dia­na Damrau will be working with ad­van­ced vo­cal stu­dents on song and ope­ra re­per­toire and pro­vi­ding in­sights into her ar­tis­tic work and her ap­proach to style, pre­sence and tech­ni­que. A high­light is the ar­tist talk on Tu­es­day evening with Dia­na Damrau and trai­ning di­rec­tor Prof. Mi­chel­le Breedt on the ar­tis­tic work, ca­re­er and trai­ning of young sin­gers.

Stu­dents of the HfMDK will take part in the mas­ter class, selec­ted by Dia­na Damrau herself af­ter an in­ter­nal ap­p­li­ca­ti­on pro­cess. The­re are also two pla­ces avail­ab­le for stu­dents from other uni­ver­si­ties. Ad­van­ced and ta­len­ted Mas­ter's vo­cal stu­dents as well as stu­dents in the con­cert ex­ami­na­ti­on (sin­ging) can ap­p­ly.

The mas­ter­class is open to the pu­blic on selec­ted days and will be par­ti­al­ly broad­cast via live­stream. This al­lows in­te­rested par­ties to fol­low the joint work at clo­se quar­ters. The fes­ti­ve con­clu­si­on of the mas­ter­class is an or­ches­tral con­cert with the Frank­furt Cham­ber Phil­har­mo­nic Or­ches­tra, in which the stu­dents pre­sent selec­ted ari­as and en­sem­bles.

The "Get clas­sy" mas­ter­class is being held in tri­bu­te to Prof. Mar­tin Gründ­ler, who­se many ye­ars of work as a vo­cal tea­cher at the HfMDK have shaped ge­nera­ti­ons of sin­gers.

The par­ti­ci­pants of the mas­ter class sin­ging with Dia­na Damrau pre­sent them­sel­ves in a song con­cert at the HfMDK Frank­furt. The con­cert gi­ves an in­sight into the in­ten­si­ve work of the past few days and shows young sin­gers with selec­ted song pro­grams at a high ar­tis­tic le­vel - in­spi­red and ac­com­pa­nied by the work with one of the most im­portant so­pra­nos of our time.
