Leonardo da Vinci's ambition was to elevate painting to the rank of a science. Because Renaissance artists wanted to be recognized as scientists, art academies were created as institutions. This is how the relationship between the art academy and artistic research could be summarized historically. It is a complicated story that is about self-empowerment, but also about discipline. A story from which we can learn a lot.

Research is a practice, and as a practice it is not only determined by method and content, but is also situated in various ways: spatially, discursively, institutionally, geopolitically. What applies to art also applies to research: its methodological orientation and its content are closely linked to its multidimensionally determined location. The question is how it relates to this situation, whether it reflects on it and understands it as an opportunity or (futilely) seals itself off from it.

Anke Haarmann is Professor of Practice and Theory of Research in the Visual Arts at Leiden University/Royal Academy of Art The Hague and head of the PhDArts doctoral program there. At HAW Hamburg, she is Professor of Design Theory and Design Research and heads the "Center for Design Research", which she founded.

Christian Grüny is Professor of Aesthetics and Theories of the Present at the Campus Gegenwart of the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts.
